Design philosophy

This site was designed by Nick Freeland and has been re-engineered by Derek Turner to meet two criteria:

1. The site should be accessible to everyone. In order to do this we have produced an alternative style of presentation based on the 'Clear Print' guidelines issued by the Royal National Institute for Blind People This link will open in a new browser window (or tab).
   Cantabile has no control over the contents of external sites.. Each page has the facility to invoke this alternative styling by clicking on the 'Text unclear?' link. In addition a number of features, invisible to the sighted user, are included in order to make life easier for those using screen-readers.
   
   
2. The site should be usable with any browser the user chooses. To this end only valid HTML 5 and Cascading Style Sheets (level 3) are used. This allows us to keep to the original design but to 'degrade gracefully' in browsers that do not support (for example) JavaScript or images. Also, as a matter of principle, we do not believe that users should be obliged to download plugins or other software in order to view content. However, users wishing to hear our streamed audio will need either an HTML 5 compatible browser or a flash-compatible plug-in. Users will also need appropriate viewers/players for some of the linked external files.
